5 Tips to Stay Motivated Among this Busy Season
Today I want to share about motivation for work, because I have started school and I know it can be hard to keep motivation high during fall semester. Sometimes it feels like autumn is passing by in years, rather than months.
That's not to say that you aren't enjoying yourself, but it can be hard to keep yourself fueled and feeling inspired at times during the winter months. So, here are five tips to help you keep yourself at the top of your game during this busy season:
Show up for Yourself
If you are going into fall semester as a student, especially with mental health issues, it can be a bit of a difficult transition. You may feel excited, yet resistant to change your routine and you might not feel as yourself as you'd like.
That's okay, because it is a completely normal response. In fact, I'm experiencing a bit of that myself. But I know that there's only one thing that I can do to make it better, and that's to show up for myself, continue to go to my classes or at least get my foot in the door, and recognize that I am fully capable and able to adapt.
It can sometimes be a challenge, but ultimately, if you want to make it easier on yourself, the trick is not to avoid but to show up fully. It doesn't mean you have to be perfect. But just commit to yourself, and then you'll have a strong foundation to go off of during those busy times.
Commit to You-Time
One thing I'm doing that's different this semester is protecting my free time. Three out of four of the classes I'm currently taking are academic, so I'm expecting a workload, but I'm also protecting my self care routines and my you-time.
If you don't refuel the gas tank, how do you expect the car to go far? The same thing goes for you. You need time to decompress and relax, and that's what will be your biggest help during times of excess work, because you'll be doing enough for you to keep going.
Out of ideas for self-care? Don't worry I've got you covered: Do a face mask, go to a yoga class, practice drawing or painting, get a massage, get your nails done, go to sleep earlier, drink a warm beverage, take a nap, or listen to music. There are so many options out there.
Surround Yourself with Positive Vibes
Imagine if you were working at your desk, and suddenly someone came up to you and started yelling at you. It would be pretty hard to keep working, right? Well, often times that's what we do to ourselves.
Either we listen to our inner critic all day long, or we subject ourselves to that virtually or in person. As much as you can, try to limit the negative voices around you. Maybe that means unfollowing someone, or setting up boundaries in a relationship. Whatever it is, do it!
So, it is much easier to eliminate the external stressors than it is to go inward, isn't it? In silencing your inner critic, you have much more space in your brain for work as well as the things you love.
Practice ignoring them, or replacing the thoughts with more positive ones. You could even do a visualization of the voices becoming smaller and smaller until they disappear. If you want to be able to keep going and work well, it really comes down to the essentials. Eat well, get enough sleep and make sure you feel good inside. Sadly, many people don't get the amount of sleep they actually need.
Whether it's taking a long, hot bath before you go to bed or simply turning off electronics an hour before bed, prioritizing your sleep pays off in more ways than one.

Set an Intention
Words can be a big influence in our lives, especially if they are our own. In those times when we're about to give up, words have the power to help us get back up on our feet and continue through tough times to a better tomorrow.
Maybe that seems a bit dramatic, but it is true that setting an intention will help keep you motivated to continue your work. For me, I always aim for A's in all my classes. This isn't a demand, I've gotten B's before and it was hard earned, but the important part is how that intention motivates me.
I do not feel for myself that a failing grade or a D is acceptable. I mean, if I am really struggling it is different, but often you can get more than that even if you don't know the material. I just keep applying myself, devote time to understanding things I have trouble with, and keep going.
Because I set that standard with myself, homework isn't an option for me. It is a requirement, because I am aiming for that A, even if my best turns out to be a B. I show up fully and I honor my word. That is why it works.
When I don't feel like doing my work or I feel completely exhausted, I remember my intention and it keeps me going. Sometimes I do compromise by dividing my work or taking more breaks, but still honor my word by doing the work to get the grade I want, and often times I do.
So, set an intention that you will honor, and stick to it.
