A Guide For Oracle Decks

Happy New Year! I hope you've had a great 2017, and here's to an even better 2018!

Anyway, today we’re going to get mystical. I posted on Instagram about my oracle deck a few days ago, and asked you gals if you wanted me to write a post on it. You said yes, and so by popular demand, I’m here to talk all about the oracle.

I’ll tell you the ins and outs of the oracle, my tips for using it, and give you some decks to check out if you’re interested. So, what are we waiting for? Let’s dive right in!

What is the oracle?

An oracle deck is a card deck that you can use for a number of purposes. Some say it predicts the future, some say it’s a way for the divine to send messages to you; I like to use it for intention setting and as a sort of devotional.

It’s a very intuitive practice, designed to promote personal growth and development. If you’re skeptic, I totally get it. “So, you’re saying that I am going to improve my life by drawing a stupid card? That somehow this card is supposed to contain wisdom for the contents of my life? Really?”

I get it. But honestly, if you think about it, you put your trust in a lot of tiny things. For instance, your life is ruled by a clock, a tiny thing that ticks. So, if this somehow can help you to grow, why not try it? What’s to lose? Yes, you might feel insane drawing a card to set an intention for your day, but really, it isn’t that different than reading a devotional.

The truth is, there’s not much to lose, but there’s the possibility of gaining insight, or at least a fun habit in the process.

How to Get Started

The oracle can feel confusing at first, or at least a little weird, being more of a mystical practice. To make it more of a seamless transition, I decided to give you a few tips to get started:

Start with An App

One way to make it less weird to start with is by not buying a physical deck. That way you don’t feel so intimated holding a physical card deck, and you can carry it wherever you go. This is how I started, and I have to be honest, there are some beautiful decks out there. Two of my favorites are Spirit Messages and WOTO

Do A Daily One-Card Spread

One or the best ways to familiarize yourself with the oracle is to use it. A daily practice that I found enriching in my early days was to do a daily one-card spread. This is where you draw one card based on a question or, what I like to do, which is draw one card as the intention for the day.

Sort of like a devotional, I will draw one card and remember what it said throughout the day, it’s mesage helping to set a tone for my personal focus that day. I’ve had major insights some days, and other days I’ve just had a nicer day because of it.

Let Your Intuition Guide You

When doing a reading, physical or digital, you want to feel into it. Trust yourself to pick a card that is right for you. The moments when, rather than shuffling, I felt out which card was was right, I often picked one that was. Experiment with different spreads, get really comfortable with it, and just go with the flow.

A Few Decks to Think About

So, you may want to get started with a physical deck because you find you are more tactile than the average bear. Or, maybe you’ve already been using an oracle deck and you want to hold physical cards in your hands.

For me, I felt like it would be yet another great reason to unplug, and I wanted a physical deck to feel out. One deck that had already been calling my name for some time, that my heart was basically set on, was Gabby Bernstein’s The Universe Has Your Back Deck.

And, in true ‘coincidence, I think not’ fashion, I happened to get that exact deck for Christmas (among other, beautiful gifts-thanks fam!). I love it, especially since it isn’t too ‘out there’, but it may not be for you. There are various other decks to choose from: The Lightwork Oracle, WOTO in print, and the Rumi Oracle.

That will be it for today! I hope you enjoyed this more mystical type of post, let me know below if you want more posts like this.
